Elven Autumn House

Ariss tells us that he made this piece as a gift but was so pleased with it that he was reluctant to let it go. Ariss, you're a better man than me. I'd have told the intended recipient that it went wrong, given them a gift voucher, and kept it for myself.

The irregular shape is an idea that got stuck in my head since I played a really old PC game, called Populus. It took about two weeks to complete, two days of which were spent making the roof.

The main structure is made of a balsa wood (which is visible in the final model), and the empty spaces were filled with foamcore wall panels cut to fit.

The roof is made of cereal box card, just like most of my roofs. The shape of the tiles was chosen to give a 'dragon scales' feel. The toppings (roof and chimmney) are green-stuff, which was crudely cut in a star shape after it dried.

The rocks are actual rocks I once found at a road digging site. It's as soft as chalk and floats in water, I have no idea what it is but it is an amazing material. I was able to sculpt the ornaments with a pin. It is in fact so soft I had to seal it with a couple of layers of PVA glue.

The last detail to be applied were the autumn leaves, which are various dried herbs painted yellow and red, and then crushed.
