Endor Style Landing Pad

Endor Style Landing PadSchasse constructed this piece as an entry for our Movie Set Competition and based it's design upon the Endor Landing Platform from "Star Wars VI, Return of the Jedi". It is here that Luke Skywalker is turned over to his father, Darth Vader, and taken up to the Death Star in a shuttle. The top deck provides a landing place for airborne craft while the lower gantries provide docking facilities for AT-AT walking machines.

At the heart of this piece is an old metal tray and two plastic tubs that originally contained cleaning wipes. These can be seen in the image below with rectangular holes already cut for the gantry doorways. Later they would have large stones placed inside the tubs to add weight to the base of the model for improved stability.

The same image also shows a set of plastic shapes, cut from ice cream containers, and destined to become supports for the gantries.

The gantries themselves are made from pieces of a plastic grid (white) with granny grating (black) cut to form the floor and side mesh. Roofs were made for the gantries using card and this is supported on posts made from syringe plungers.

The top of the tray was covered in cardboard with pieces of polystyrene foam in the void to give support. Small squares of thin card were fixed randomly on the surface and painted in various shades of grey. The yellow ring was painted on with two coats of yellow over a stencilled base coat of white. A black outline was then painted around it. The fence around the edge is made from fishing line, threaded through syringe tops and hot glued into place.

Lighting was added by arranging a string of LEDs around the edge of the platform. They can be set to blink or to remain steadily lit. The four light towers at the corners are cut from hard plastic grating, with magnets hot glued on the top and bottom. The spotlights themselves are purple Halloween lights with metal bases; bought from a craft store for $12.50 each.
